The Process | From the initial concept sketches, to vectored shapes in Illustrator, to various layout iterations.

Format | Print - textbook

Media | Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop CS5

Audience | Medical students

Purpose | This illustration was created as part of a Neuroanatomy course. The purpose of this project was to produce an original, conceptual medical illustration while conforming to a set criteria for textbook publication. This page depicts how certain meningitis-causing bacteria enter the subarachnoid space of the brain and set off a cascade which leads to inflammation of the leptomeninges and hydrocephalus, or excessive fluid in the ventricles of the brain.

Ths was also a technical exercise in combining Illustrator and Photoshop rendering. Sketches were first outlined and turned into vector colored shapes using Illustrator. Afterwards, they were brought into Photoshop and rendered using an airbrush technique.
